Music videos analysis

Analysis of music videos

Rooftops by the Lostprophets

Within the music video of rooftops the narrative follows three characters that all lead similar lives and all end very similarly as well. The video jumps straight into a disequilibrium with all three character experiencing similar problems of being part of a subcultural society. We wish to use a similar narrative story within our video but our three characters will not be as so interlinked as the ones within “Rooftops”. We decided to use this narrative idea within our music video of “losing my religion” because it allows us to represent just how people can lose something dear to them, like the lyrics state, in different ways allowing the music video to have more context.

In the End by Linkin Park & Bring me to life by Evanescence

“In the End” shows a lot of abstract content which is not to dissimilar to what the original video to “losing my religion shows”, “In the End” is set in a very dark and derelict place that seems to be surrounded by emptiness and depression, our video will contain a similar but not identical setting as this will also emphasise the depression and anger that is being created from the disequilibrium that is shown within the lyrics, for example “Like a hurt lost and blinded fool, fool Oh no, I've said too much, I set it up”

“Bring me to life” contains a certain prop that we wish to mimic within our video, half way through the music video there is a girl sitting on the edge of a window wearing a smiling clown mask, yet when she removes the mask she is crying, we are using a veil over a woman’s face to cover her true emotions, even though the veil is supposed to represent marriage which is mostly seen as a happy event yet when the woman lifts the veil to reveal that she is crying like the girl in brink me to life. This is being used within our video because the representation shown of that whatever you might first think of something may actually turn out to be an opposite of what you originally believed in which is shown within the actual video of “Losing my Religion”

Everybody hurts

Since this is another song by R.E.M it made it a good video to research, The song itself is slow placed much like “losing my Religion” and since “everybody hurts” is so closely related to “losing my Religion” we wish to use a similar slow themed, depressing pace within our video interpretation not only to link within the song’s lyrics but to also relate to other songs that the band R.E.M have created.
